Christmas holidays 2016

I Love road trips.  Driving TO SLC was great (return drive was less than great, but ignore that for now... everything started off great).  e said some wonderful things: "is that a farm? we're in the country.. look at the frozen water...  cows!  this road trip is totally fun."
there were some exits we didn't take because the were snow covered and looked slippery. but mostly, the roads were clear.  we were calm and excited.   this is the first of at least 5 mountain passes: Snoqualmie.

This is coming up to the worst one (some feelings from the return drive are leaking in): in between Pendleton and LaGrande OR.  it was fine for the drive to SLC.  it's just a memorable stretch that I always anticipate on each trip.
This is another that always makes me queasy.  i don't know the name, but i just call it driving along the top of the world.  it's a high elevation and even in summer, i've seen snow.
 gotta take pics of trains!
also, i love industrial factories in the landscape.

boy oh boy, i'm so jealous of this storage on 3 walls of R's garage.

H family were so sweet.  we loved spending the night in their warm home on the way to SLC and the way back as well.  this home is full of love, a total credit to J's nurturing mothering skills and R's chill fathering skills.

J made this really fun circle quilt.  i am glad to have my sewing machine back again and looking forward to picking up some projects.
E was a trooper again.  we did watch more screen time than past road trips, but it's OK.  we both enjoyed the trip.  I sang Broadway and we also listened to lots of jack and annie (magic tree house) and other audio books (wayside school and Indian in the cupboard, etc).  we certainly didn't get through all the 20 or so books i had checked out from the library, but i was glad to have them.

love those windmills and more industrial plants.

and then we got off the highway to drive to Roberts.  snow packed roads for 18 miles.  I am glad my GPS worked to get us there.  i didn't think about driving too much, just kept going.  I felt safe, although i drove much slower than the 70 mph limit (below) or even the 50 mph on other roads.

i was always grateful when sunshine warmed the sky.  snowy unknowns are less scary with warm sunshine.
pics in the next post from our stay in Roberts.

this is the annoying part about pulling photos off two different cameras: they load out of order. oh well.  this is E's plate creation from his after school pottery class.  :)  he enjoyed this artistic outlet. often points out flowerpots or other creations that he "could make" in pottery.
i had fun making a Christmas gift for the A family.  i didn't come up with the ideas, but i put together a few things from blogs: activities for the family all together and for the kids when parents are out on date night.
cute colleagues A & E all wearing ribbons from my Christmas gift (energy squares wrapped in a dishtowel)
